The History of the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation Gauteng

In 1974, Mr. and Mrs. Newton Walker of Potchefstroom founded “The Muscular Dystrophy Research Foundation (MDRF) of South Africa”.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy affected their son, Michael. Mr. and Mrs. Walker formed the Foundation together with Mr. Wally Gough, chairman of the Rotary Club of Potchefstroom, and representatives of the then Cripple Care Association.

They felt there was a need to reach out to other parents and families in a similar situation and to support research into MD with the ultimate goal of finding a cure. Mr. Harry Newton Walker was a well-known resident of Potchefstroom and a former Springbok rugby player. He passed away on 6 August 2008.

In 1998, the Foundation was renamed “The Muscular Dystrophy Foundation (MDF) of South Africa”. The focus had shifted away from supporting research on a branch level to focusing on improving the quality of life for those living with Muscular Dystrophy.

Since 1974, the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation has always endeavored to help all people affected with MD.

The Gauteng branch is located in Florida Park in Gauteng.

The purpose of MDF Gauteng is on improving the quality of life for those living with Muscular Dystrophy by means of counselling, group & emotional support, valuable information as well as referrals to genetic counseling and other clinics as well as assistance with specialized disability equipment if the funding is available.

The geographical area covered by the Gauteng branch is Gauteng, Limpopo, North-West, Mpumalanga and the Free State.
